Then you need IBM’s new Memory eXpansion Technology, or MXT, which effectively doubles the amount of memory in a computer. Ooh, ooh, how does it work? Well, we’ll tell you. But only if you promise not to tell anyone else. And that includes your mum. The Memory eXpansion Technology system employs a chip that acts as an intermediary between the computer?s processor and the memory, encoding data so that it takes up half the space, company officials say. To compensate for the time it takes to encode and decode the data, the chip will store the data used most frequently by the processor in a special cache, speeding up access. IBM is to introduce the new technology into its Netfinity line of servers, but has said the technology could also be used in desktop PCs and even handheld devices. MXT is 10,000 times faster than similar software-based schemes, company spokesman Matthew McMahon said, which use the processor to compact the data, thus slowing it down. MXT could save a typical Internet service provider millions of dollars in memory, the company reckons. What it’s not saying at the moment is how much the feature will cost.
