Computer Orchestra
A crowdsourcing project by ECAL students lets users create and conduct their own musical orchestra
As the name suggests, Computer Orchestra is an innovative musical group where the performers are made up of computers.
Developed by Simon de Diesbach, Jonas Lacôte and Laura Perrenoud, three students from ECAL University of Art and Design in Lausanne, Switzerland, the orchestra uses a crowdsourcing platform where users can record or choose from an existing list of musical samples, and assign them to different computers.
After all the ”musicians” are delegated specific functions, the conductors can direct their own orchestra with body movements. A Kinect system interprets their gestures in real time and sends a signal to corresponding posts via Wi-Fi. These then play the assigned recordings, accompanying them with generative visuals.
