Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Harris Semiconductor have announced a joint engineering research project to advance the "state-of-the-art in wireless networking." The project objective is to demonstrate a next-generation wireless network capable of transmitting Internet video five times faster than is currently possible over wireless LANs.
The demonstration system will implement the latest Integrated Services Architecture (ISM) techniques and display ISA video on an advanced portable video terminal. The research project &£45;- known as the "Mobile Information Infrastructure " &£45;- is based on advanced research in mobile computing and network computers.
Sun's portion of the project involves development of a mobile network computer optimized for video reception and display as well as network connectivity. The Harris contribution is a wireless data link that achieves an 11 megabit per second (Mbps) data rate by use of Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology and a radio signal modulation technique known as M-ary Orthogonal Keying (MOK). Harris will research and develop a video-optimized wireless protocol which will be implemented using a high-speed, low-power, single-chip protocol controller, ultimately enabling all of this technology to be packaged into a single credit-card sized package. Cool shit.
