A challenge has been thrown down to all you speedy filmmakers out there, with the launch of a national 48-hour film challenge in August, held simultaneously in Bristol, London, Manchester and as part of the Edinburgh international film festival.

Called Speed Shooting the event is taking place on 16-18 August. Filmmakers must script, shoot, and edit a five-minute short film in just 48 hours. To make it even more difficult, participants are given a random title and genre for their film. Picked from hundreds of titles, they will have to show how creative they can be without any forward planning.

Supported by Film Four and the UK Film Council, the 48-hour film challenge is also throwing the gauntlet down to some major players in the film industry, including Arif Kapadia, Mike Figgis and Shane Meadows. Invites have also gone out to film-loving celebrities such as Dave Stewart, Jarvis Cocker and Jonathan Ross. The films will be screened and regional prizes will be given at each of the venues. On 14 September, a grand prize-giving will be held at the Curzon Mayfair in London.
