Once memorably described as a "digital pub", The Electronic Lounge began in April 1994 in the bar of London's Institute of Contemporary Arts as an outlet for the musical proclivities of Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner) and a host of mouse potatoes a and lounge lizards who at the time had no space to listen to the type of music they wanted to hear. Without ever taking a
break (the informal free event takes place on the first Tuesday of each month) the Lounge has become a regular midweek meeting place for like-minded individuals, including artists, writers, musicians, videomakers and music fans interested in the good old analogue art of conversation.
This CD, compiled and mixed by Michael Wells, is a distillation of a sound that the Lounge has made its own, featuring names that have since become well-known (such as Techno Animal and Panasonic), as well as other, resolutely underground artists - the best in (mostly European) electronic jazz, minimal future funk and fractured beats.
There will be a launch party for the album at the ICA on June 2nd, utilising the theatre and cinematheque as well as the bar area, featuring live performances as well as DJs. The event will include a Scanner vs. Signs Of Chaos soundclash featuring international guests and an exclusive film presentation. More details to follow.
