The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2003 is designed by the seminal Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer. This, his first project in the United Kingdom, will be sited on the Gallery’s lawn from 20 June to 14 September, admission is free.
To celebrate the opening there will be a talk today (June 20): “Niemeyer -The Godfather of Brazillian Modernism” with Jose Carlos Sussekind, Lord Norman Foster, and Lauro Cavalcanti, Chaired by Jonathan Glancey. For more info contact the gallery
Niemeyer was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1907, where he graduated from the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio in 1934, before joining a team of architects collaborating with Le Corbusier on a new Ministry of Education and Health in the city.
Oscar Niemeyer says:
“I am delighted to be designing the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, my first structure in the United Kingdom. My idea was to keep this project different, free and audacious. That is what I prefer. I like to draw, I like to see from the blank sheet of paper a palace, a cathedral, the figure of a woman appearing. But life for me is much more important than architecture.”
