Either the US army's been doing some sneaky Star Wars-style army building or someone's being caught playing propaganda. Reporters in Olympia, Washington, were at first bemused, then angry when two identical letters landed in their mailbag purporting to be from different soldiers serving in Iraq. "Letters from hometown soldiers describing their successes rebuilding Iraq have been appearing in newspapers across the country as U.S. public opinion on the mission sours," reports Ledyard King of The Olympian newspaper. "And all the letters are the same." The message was none too subtle. "The quality of life and security for the citizens has been largely restored, and we are a large part of why that has happened," read the letters. A little light investigative reporting found the same letter, but with different signatures, in 11 other newspapers. When contacted, none of the soldiers whose names appear on the letters said they actually wrote it. One said he didn't even know about the letter until his father congratulated him for getting it published. Via PR Watch.
