In celebration of the 57th birthday of the Ampex VRX-1000, the first commercial video cassette recorder, YouTube launched a VHS mode that appears on certain videos. Allowing viewers to relive the grainy, low quality days of their VHS youth, the button has a certain sentimentality for those who grew up in the early days of home video. The feature can be activated by selecting the VHS button on the bottom-right of a video.

Complete with grainy artifacts over videos and fuzzy, distorted screens when the video is paused, the feature captures the essence of watching a VHS. Gone but not forgotten, VHS mode is a pleasant trip down memory lane and is both indication of how far technology has come within the last few decades, but also the nostalgia many people feel for the past.
