The Sundance Film Festival announced the final piece in the lineup for the upcoming 15th edition of the benchmark film event, revealing the 58 short films selected from 1,730 submissions (up from almost 1,500 last year) that will screen during the ten-day event next month.

Taking place on January 21-31, 1999, the festival will screen films either before feature films or in one of five shorts programs. In addition, the Shorts Jury will present a Special Recognition Award in Short Filmmaking.

In a prepared statement, Sundance programmer Trevor Groth said, “This year’s crop is as diverse and talent laden as any other,” and the lineup bears this out. Among notable films and filmmakers are Sundance mainstay Corky Quakenbush’s “A Pack of Gifts, Now,” a claymation Christmas spoof on “Apocalypse Now”; “A Pregnant Moment,” by Jay Rosenblatt, whose “Human Remains” received an honorable mention at the 1998 Sundance fest; “Kansas,” by “Eye of God” director Tim Blake Nelson,” Lisa Collins’ award- winning “Tree Shade,” and Amy Talkington’s multiple award-winning “Second Skin.”
