Using the model of resistant media and electronic disturbance as expounded by visionary theorists/activists Hakim Bey and Critical Art Ensemble, Resistant Media intends to provide a space for artists and cultural activists working with tactical media to conceptualise activist strategies as part of NxT - Northern Territory Xposure, the Territory’s first Multimedia Symposium on the development of their program.NxT is a five day intensive examination and exploration of new media arts. In particular ANAT have been working closely with the NxT steering committee on the development component of the Symposium to take place at the Ski Club (adjacent to the NT Museum and Art Gallery, where the conference component of the symposium is to take place) which will form the third component of the resistant media project ANAT have been developing
during 1999.“Resistant Media is a research project which critiques the assemblage and reassemblage of fragmented cultural images which drift through the grid of cultural possibility. It is an ongoing inquiry into whether it is even still possible to develop an art practice grounded in notions of politics through the internet.” says Director of the Australian Network for Art and Technology, Amanda McDonald Crowley.Australian participants will include Martin Thompson (aka FTR) who will develop a collaborative project using hotline; Josephine Starrs will develop workshops around computer games and discuss the blurred boundaries between interactive art and computer games; Sam de Silva, a media artist and activist who has spent time in the NT over the last year, in particular working in Kakadu on the Jabiluka campaign. Sam is interested in the use of media strategies to make campaigns more effective. Ian Andrews - of Disco Stu, Video Subvertigo, clan analogue, hypnoblob, battleship potato & horse he’s sick fame - will present and discuss video work and will also perform at the NxT nightclub event. The event is from 30 September - 4 October 1999
