NMT 2000 is “the UK’s leading new media prize and is, as such, the benchmark against which the industry’s finest creative work is measured”, if you believe the press and this year has been won by Martin Casey.

The winning multimedia piece entitled “Born With A Broken Tongue” forms a detailed study of the frustrations felt by stutterer’s. The objective of Casey’s CD-Rom-based piece was to educate users about stuttering. A stutterer himself, Casey used multilayered images, text and sound to convey the frustrations of the condition.

He used his own voice and childhood pictures, as well as sound bytes taken from his own experiences to keep the piece personal. Casey’s project

also took the award for the best use of typography. The awards, sponsored by AKQA “The Brand Leader” and Creative Review “The Lead Brander” are to be held next Wednesday, December 1st at the largest, trendiest graveyard of Sparc 60?s known to man, the ICA. We are a little gutted as the “Protein powered” Revamp was nominated for the award, but fell short of winning ? as Ali G might say, “dem judge gezzas ain?t down wi? di phunky sh*t ? init.”

Either way there will be the usual attractions and speeches by “important people”, as well as a “full phat” helping of some Revamp reasoning - “dropping some old skool flavas” with some “analogue antics” ? not one to be missed. The Institute of Contemporary Arts is on the Mall, London, SW1 5A11.
