Inhabiting Metropolis aims to explore how we imagine the 'space' of the Internet. From "the city of bits to networked surveillance systems, the city is one of the dominant metaphors for the web. A space that evolves through strategic design and organic development, a space of multiple interconnecting networks, of communal experience. The way we choose to represent the web is often based on, and reflects, our familiarity with urban space."

Inhabiting Metropolis is a website artists project - an ongoing dialogue  between practitioners about how they respond to the metaphors of the Net. For this project, commissioned artists and writers have been invited to move in, inhabit and unpick concepts like digital 'space', 'community' and 'network'. In Inhabiting Metropolis the artists are the constructors, the facilitators and the navigators.

Inhabiting Metropolis is not intended to be a stand alone web project but an ongoing site, building over a one year period. It is an experimental project, integrating the functions of an on-line exhibition - curated like a gallery space - with a critical discussion site - edited like a journal - and a mediated access point to other web projects.
