The preliminary list of speakers and panels for the latest HOPE hacker conference ? H2K - is out . Looks like a lot of phun? High on the agenda this year are ethics and the public role of hackers. Is it possible or desirable to have a shared ?Hacker’s Code? of ethics? Could this help distinguish hackers from script kiddies from criminals? What is the role of Hacktivism on the Net? How does it work? Panelists looking at this subject include Tfish from Cult of the Dead Cow, WTO demonstrator and activist Shapeshifter, and Bronc, who has a nation of more than a billion people calling for his head because of some Chinese web sites he, erm, modified. The case of Hackers vs. Corporate America has been continuing apace this year, and the conference picks this up by looking in detail at the DeCSS and the DMCA fiascos. ?Thanks to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act,? say the organisers, ?it’s actually illegal to figure things out and tell people how technology works. There is a battle brewing like none we’ve ever seen.?In fact this certainly seems to be the year of the socially-aware hacker. The conference will also featurer the 2600 documentary ?Freedom Downtime?, focusing on efforts to prevent a new major motion picture from defaming Kevin Mitnick during his time in prison, will finally be premiered at H2K on Friday evening, July 14. The film feature interviews with many from the hacker community.More H2K: www.h2k.net
