THE FULL MONTY took home two European Film Awards, with wins for Best European Film and a Best Film win in the People?s Awards category, the latter being voted upon by international audiences. Miramax's THE ENGLISH PATIENT was the other dual winner, garnering kudos for European Actress of the Year (Juliette Binoche) and European Cinematographer of the Year (John Seale). In the other acting award, Bob Hoskins took home European Actor of the Year for upcoming October Films release TWENTYFOURSEVEN, while Chris Vander Stappen and Alain Berliner garnered the European Screenwriter of the Year award for MA VIE EN ROSE.

The European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award went to Jeanne Moreau (THE 400 BLOWS, JULES AND JIM) and the European Fipresci award, voted upon by international critics went to Manoel De Oliveira, director of VIAGEM AO PRINCIPIO DO MUNDO (JOURNEY TO THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD). The Screen International Five Continents Award went to 1997 New York and 1998 Sundance Film Festival entrant HANA-BI by Takeshi Kitano, and the European Documentary Award went to Benoit Derveaux, Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne for GIGI, MONICA...ET BIANCA.

The remaining two People's Awards went to Jodie Foster for Best Actress and Javier Bardem, for Best Actor.
