Ecotonoha is a rather nice project created by NEC that invites to create a "word leaf" which enables the collaborative growth of virtual trees. For every 100 signatures, NEC announced that it would plant one extra tree as part of its afforestation activities on Kangaroo Island, Australia. The project attracted about 170,000 global visitors and 60,997 messages between July and December of 2003. As a result, NEC planted an additional 609 trees on Kangaroo Island. Ecotonoha was coined by combining the words "ecology" and "kotonoha," which means 'word' in ancient Japanese. NEC believes that these prominent awards honoring ecotonoha are recognition of the creativity, and the innovative idea of creating a communication forum using text messages as leaves, as well as the logic surrounding creation of various structures of trees depending on visitor's clicks.
