The Contemporary Art Organisations of Australia (CAOs) have just recently launched "Australia's premier gateway to contemporary arts organisations on the web". CAOs is a national network of fifteen contemporary art organisations which play a pivotal role in the development and support of contemporary art practice in Australia.

In recognition of the growing importance of the internet as a profiling and exhibition tool, CAOs have initiated a national web gateway linking to each of the websites of the member organisations. The CAOs website launches a new phase in the way Australia's cutting edge contemporary arts organisations interface with their audiences.

Coincident with exploration of social practices has been investigation into technological initiatives. CAOs have long been active in the development of multi-media art, firstly through the encouragement of combinations of different forms, time-based practice and work using moving image, and then through inquiry into new technological forms, such as video, computer media and the internet, facilitating a practice that was ignored by larger art organisations. CAOs' role in developing intermedia practices is now bearing fruit in the current Australian

emphasis on multi- and screen-based media.
