This week Big brother steps up the surveillance with a system that can find and track specific people as they attend a protest or walk down a street. The borough of Newham, London will try out 140 CCTV cameras as well as 11 mobile camera units in a £60,000 six-month trial. The 'Mandrake face recognition system' is designed to seek out 'target faces' in the closed circuit television (CCTV).
Activities group, Undercurrents exposed the police on their own video cameras when a 7 foot Alien appeared on their CCTV prowling the streets of Bournemouth. The story unfolded when residents got fed up with police cameras pointing in their windows. Police response was to send 4 car loads of officers armed with dogs to chase the "criminal" only to find it was only a local resident in a costume.
