Kenneth Kuhn, 48, is recovering after receiving a kidney transplant. The donor, his brother Charles, didn’t consent to the procedure: he has been in a coma for a month after suffering a heart attack. “The family was all in agreement,” said the Toledo, Ohio, judge who approved the transplant. “His son was in court to testify for this, his daughter was there, even his ex-wife.” Charles had also indicated he wanted to be an organ donor on his driver’s license.

Meanwhile, Nancy Nearing, 42, of Arlington, Va., was “stunned and upset” when she learned her boss, Art Helms, 49, had recently lost both of his kidneys to disease. “It just blew me away that he was that sick and I hadn’t realized it,” she said, so she offered to give him one of her kidneys. Her tissues matched well and the transplant was a success. But before the surgery, “they grilled me. They said, ‘You can’t do this to protect your job you know’”.
