Puretunes.com claims to offer legal, cheap mp3 downloads without the consent of the record labels that own the recordings. The Madrid-based company says that a loophole in Spanish law allows them to offer tracks from well-known artists without the consent of copyright holders. Users pay for the service by membership period rather than on a per-song basis. Eight hours of unlimited access costs $3.99, rising to $167.88 for a year of unrestricted downloads. Puretunes will pay royalties to artists via trade associations rather than their record labels, and so claim that they do not require the co-operation of labels. The International Federation of Phonographic Industry insists that the service is illegal and seem likely to pursue legal action against the company.
