Now that we?ve gone beyond the desktop and entering the wireless wonderland of mobile devices, new battle lines are being draw between Palm and Microsoft for control of one the must under exploited yet intimate spaces, your car.Palm announced that it and Delphi Automotive Systems are creating a new company, MobileAria, to develop a hands-free mobile Internet services platform for drivers. The companies said that MobileAria will provide an open platform for in-vehicle access and management of personal information and delivery of Internet-based services, content, and entertainment.The platform will have a voice-activated interface, the company said in a statement. The content services will be available via integrated hardware platform consisting of Delphi's Communiport Mobile Productivity Center, mobile phones, and Palm handhelds. The initial platform will be available to automobile manufacturers and in the aftermarket in the second quarter of next year, the companies said. Meanwhile, Microsoft said it will introduce its newest automotive software platform at Convergence 2000, a conference for automotive electronics. It will include its strategy for the next generation of telematics, or in-car information systems based on the Microsoft Windows CE for Automotive 3.0 platform.
