In [1977 there were 344 million vinyl sales, while last year there were barely 3.4 million](http://digitalmusicnews.com/stories/050511vinyl?ref=protein.xyz). We know the music industry is evolving into something new, but a report from [Neilsen](http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/consumer/cue-the-music-driven-by-digital-music-sales-up-in-2011/?ref=protein.xyz) harks back to the old days, showing vinyl sales on the up.

In recent years sales have been stagnant, but the Neilsen study showed a 25% increase in sales over the last year. This is still only 1.6% of total physical music sales but could it signal a real change in the way we consume music?

In our [Audience Survey](http://prote.in/feed/2011/04/protein-audience-survey-is-here?ref=protein.xyz) this year we took a look at some trends in music, and noticed this pattern of vinyl re-appreciation amongst our audience. Vinyl was the second most popular format for listening to music. As we are becoming increasingly more digital it is interesting to note this retrospect. In the face of our virtual music evolution - clouded music about to blow up - there appears to be a shift back towards the traditional, and limited-edition vinyl and physical artwork releases. Pretty cool.
