It seems that the world of Interactive TV is slowly working out what to do with itself after many years of fumbling around in the digital dark. There is no doubt that Sky is leading this revolution and the launch of the new Astra 2B satellite is going to do wonders for it?s arsenal. The new satellite's footprint will primarily cover the UK and with 30 transponders, ASTRA 2B potentially more than doubles the capacity of the Sky Digital platform, although some of the transponders can be rotated to face anywhere in the world.Sky?s own Open... [is that three or four dots] interactive service should benefit greatly from this new system, so expect to start seeing some new expanded options before the end of the year as the in-orbit testing will apparently take 2-3 weeks. Astra 2B was meant to launch last year. A further 15 transponders will hopefully become available in November when Astra 2D is launched. The launch of Astra 2C has been delayed until Q1 2001. For any satellite hackers out there wanting the ride some awesome bandwidth through the digital ether, the satellites will all be co-located with Astra 2A at 28.2 degrees East.
