[I/O Brush](http://web.media.mit.edu/%7Ekimiko/iobrush/?ref=protein.xyz) is a new drawing tool to explore colours, textures, and movements found in everyday materials by "picking up" and drawing with them. I/O Brush looks like a regular physical paintbrush but has a small video camera with lights and touch sensors embedded inside. Outside of the drawing canvas, the brush can pick up colour, texture, and movement of a brushed surface. On the canvas, artists can draw with the special "ink" they just picked up from their immediate environment.

I/O Brush is the creation of Kimiko Ryokai, Stefan Marti, Hiroshi Ishii Josh Monzon & Rob Figueiredo of [the MIT Media Lab](http://www.media.mit.edu/?ref=protein.xyz) and was awarded the [Industrial Design Excellence Gold Award](http://images.businessweek.com/ss/05/06/idea2005/source/139.htm?ref=protein.xyz) by the Industrial Design Society of America (2005).
