# Farm 432: Insect Breeding

Austrian industrial designer [Katharina Unger](http://www.kunger.at/?ref=protein.xyz) has designed a desktop home-breeding insect farm that allows people to self-produce edible fly larvae.   
  
Farm 432 was created in response to the seemingly incessant demand on the world's food resources, particularly for meat, with many forecasters predicting we will eat ourselves out of food within a few decades. Unger claims that whilst we already use one third of the world's croplands simply to produce feed for our livestock, this will increase by 50% by 2050 in order to keep pace. She hopes her device will enable "people to turn against the dysfunctional system of current meat production by growing their own protein source at home".  
  
Much like [Lepsis](https://www.prote.in/en/feed/2013/06/the-lepsis?ref=protein.xyz), the grasshopper farm we featured a while ago, this project both suggests a increasing awareness of the importance of sustainability as well as a new-found attitude towards the prospect of eating bugs. Yum.
