The MI5 Security Service came out of the shadows Tuesday to announce it had set up a phone-line to let people call in with tip-offs. This would help it fight terrorism, espionage by foreign powers and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

The phone number - 0171 930 9000 - can be found through directory inquiries and will appear in telephone books under "MI5" and "Security Service." A government statement said reliable information was essential to help the Security Service identify threats to Britain's security "wherever in the world they originate." The identities of callers would be closely protected to ensure their safety.
