The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ([DARPA](http://darpa.mil/?ref=protein.xyz)) is [building a surveillance system for urban environments](http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/news/nation/6214289.htm?ref=protein.xyz). ["Combat Zones That See"](http://www.darpa.mil/baa/baa03-15.htm?ref=protein.xyz) ([CTS](http://www.schafercorp-ballston.com/bti2003/index.html?ref=protein.xyz)) should [deploy](http://dtsn.darpa.mil/ixo/solicitations/CTS/?ref=protein.xyz) thousands of cameras, then knit them together through [dataveillance](http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/03/07/02/0450247.shtml?tid=158&tid=99&ref=protein.xyz). (quote via [ACM TechNews](http://www.acm.org/technews/current/homepage.html?ref=protein.xyz)): DARPA plans to award a three-year contract for up to $12 million by Sept. 1\. In the first phase, at least 30 cameras would help protect troops at a fixed site. The project would use small, $400 stick-on cameras, each linked to a $1,000 personal computer. In the second phase, at least 100 cameras would be installed in 12 hours to support "military operations in an urban terrain." The second-phase software should be able to analyze the video footage and identify "what is normal \[behavior\], what is not." Both configurations will be tested at Fort Belvoir, Va., then in a foreign city. via [smartmobs](http://www.smartmobs.com/archives/001223.html?ref=protein.xyz)
